Overview
Nestled on the idyllic island of Madeira, where the Atlantic Ocean meets the rugged coastline, Reid's Palace, A Belmond Hotel, stands as an illustrious clifftop paradise. The vision of Scotsman William Reid, this magnificent pink landmark opened in 1891 and went on to attract British and European royalty, presidents and politicians, actors and artists. Winston Churchill came to write his memoirs and paint, while George Bernard Shaw was inspired to extend his stay. The two Presidential Suites, named in their honour, offer the height of luxury.
Coinciding with the opulent Edwardian era, Reid's is a grand statement of rich woods, lofty ceilings and elegant chandeliers. British artefacts are intertwined with hand-painted Portuguese tiles and local handicrafts that honour the island's multicultural character.
The gardens, spanning 10 acres and showcasing over 500 species of flora, inspire the hotel's seasonal gastronomy. Sensational dining is offered in four restaurants, including the Michelin-starred William, cliffside Villa Cipriani and alfresco Brisa Do Mar. Afternoon tea on the chequered terrace is an iconic affair. Complimentary activities such as botanical art workshops and pilates continue the garden-centred immersion.
The hotel's extraordinary location overlooking Funchal Bay and the wild Atlantic Ocean means breathtaking views and cool sea breezes are a feature of every stay. Three swimming pools include a tidal pool with ocean access. Further facilities are a children's club, tennis courts, fitness centre, and a celebrated spa offering sea views from every treatment room. Exhilarating adventures on the "island of eternal spring" range from levada hikes and mountain jeep tours to dolphin- and whale-watching trips.

Wild Peninsula
Stride out along the breathtaking São Lourenço Peninsula, a rugged basalt landscape off Madeira’s south-eastern coast.
You’ll begin the adventure in Caniçal, walking along the undulating trail through scenery devoid of vegetation, a stark contrast to the island’s Laurisilva forest and lush levadas. As you pass slivers of black-sand beaches and curious rock formations, discern other islands in the archipelago and note how huge waves batter the west flank of the peninsula while calmer waters lap the other side.
By the path’s end, head down to the beach and take a dip in the clear sea.
Afterwards, we’ll drive you to the nearby Ponta do Rosto viewpoint to enjoy an energy-replenishing spread of detox juices, granola bars, healthy wraps and fruits as you soak up the invigorating vistas.

The Miracle of Fajã dos Padres
Named after the Jesuit priests who first cultivated the spit of land, Fajã dos Padres is a lush paradise nestled on Madeira’s south coast.
Accessible only by cable car or sea, it’s now owned by the Vilhena de Mendonça family, proud producers of plump organic vegetables, juicy fruits and restored Malvasia vines.
The land is so fertile that tomatoes grow like weeds, and figs, avocados, mangoes and passion fruit can be seen in abundance. The vineyards produce famous malmsey wine; locals claim the saltiness of the air actually makes the grapes sweeter.
Enjoy an exclusive guided tour of the organic farm, a luscious wine tasting in the cellar and lunch in the restaurant, where you can savor Madeiran dishes featuring vegetables from the farm and fish from the ocean right
before you.
